The Five Who Sailed Together most famously refers to the five Sullivan brothers from Waterloo, Iowa. George, Frank, Joe, Matt, and Al enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II with the stipulation that they serve side-by-side. Tragically, all five brothers were killed in action on November 13, 1942, when their ship, the USS Juneau, was torpedoed during the Battle of Guadalcanal. Their immense sacrifice is the greatest combat-related loss by a single American family in military history.
